PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that helps prevent HIV.

Most people take PrEP as one pill once a day. When taken as prescribed, it reduces the risk of getting HIV through sex by about 99%.

There are a few different types of PrEP, which mostly vary in cost and in their side effect profiles.

A small number of people may have some nausea or upset stomach when they start PrEP, but this usually clears up in a few weeks.

Some types of PrEP have a low risk of reducing your kidney function or bone density. This is usually reversed by stopping PrEP or switching to a different form of PrEP.

Lab testing is required to start and stay on PrEP — but Freddie makes it simple with at-home lab kits and online lab results, all for free.

You'll receive a free at-home lab kit from Freddie when you book your first appointment, and before you're due for a PrEP prescription refill.

Follow-up appointments are not required, but they are available!

Typically, all that's required to refill your prescription is to answer a few questions online and complete your labs. However, you're welcome to book an appointment if you'd prefer to talk to your clinician over a call.

90% of Freddie patients pay $0 out-of-pocket for PrEP. Your cost is dependent on your state of residency and existing coverage. Freddie can help you navigate your coverage to get the lowest cost possible.
